How to Protect Wood Bath Vanities from Moisture and Mold

So you’ve finally finished your bathroom remodel and are excited to finally spend more time in it. If you have wood bath vanities though, you need to clean and protect them from mold and moisture. You should always keep them looking new as long as possible. Make use of the following useful tips:

  • Depending on the type of material you use in the bathroom, you might want to watch out for scratches or water damages. Any spills or splashes needs to be wiped as soon as possible to avoid spotting. Wood and particleboard are very susceptible to water and once the wood absorbs water, it can create mold and moisture.
  • When you clean your bathroom, especially a wood vanity, make sure that you use a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Alternatively, you can use a damp cloth to wipe the countertop, vanity and furniture in the bathroom. Make sure everything, including the bathroom vanity cabinet, are wiped clean and dry.
  • You need to pay extra attention to areas around the tub, the sink, and the shower. After a bath or a shower, there is enough moisture lingering in the air to infiltrate wood bath vanities and other cabinetry. Right after your bath or shower, quickly wipe all the areas to control the moisture levels and to prevent damage to the vanities and cabinets.
  • If you find mold or mildew growth, you need to spray the area with a bleach cleanser, and then wipe the area clean. Do not let the growth get out of hand because it will not only ruin your cabinetry, but also your health.
  • If you come across a lot of moisture in your bathroom cabinets and vanity, you should consider investing in a dehumidifier. A dehumidifier is a little plastic case with silica that can help wick the moisture in your bathroom. The plastic case needs to be replaced when it is filled to the marked line.
  • Buy cleansers that are made specifically for wood bath vanities, which you can find from various home improvement shops.
