How to Make Your Bathroom Look Like New without Doing a Complete Re-model

One very obvious problems with bathrooms today is mineral and water deposits on glass shower doors. Those of us with hard water know well how minerals make an otherwise clear shower door an opaque, dirty-looking mess. The best way to avoid water spotting on glass is to use a squeegee after each shower and then towel dry the glass along with any fixtures. When applying this technique regularly, your shower glass will retain it’s clarity and sparkle.

Opaque Shower Door

But what happens if you have not been taking such steps to prevent hard water build up and you have a layer of mineral deposits making your shower look dirty and opaque? Fortunately, there is a cleaner which is particularly good for stripping hard water stains off glass shower doors and walls. It is called Bio-Clean, and can be found at most boat stores. Designed to eliminate stubborn salt water stains on boat windshields, Bio-Clean is also very effective in removing hard water stains on glass shower doors.

Hard Water Stains

Just apply a small amount of Bio-Clean to a soft cloth and wipe it on the shower wherever hard water stains are found. Once it is clean, you can keep it clean by using a water proof coating such as Rain-X or any of the other popular glass coatings. These leave a protective film so the water does not cling to the glass surface, but forms beads which can be easily removed with a squeegee and a dry towel.

Sliding Glass Doors

This same technique and product are useful on bathroom mirrors, sliding glass doors, windows and automobile windshields.

Another suggestion to help keep shower doors clean is addressing the problem of hard water itself. Some buy water softener systems but the cost of these can be quite prohibitive. Laundry fabric softener dryer sheets contain ingredients which soften water deposits which build up on glass surfaces like your shower door. To test this method, scrub the glass with a brush to loosen the deposits and then wipe the glass with the sheet so that you can soften your hot water. Using Bio Clean is, however, easier but Bio Clean sells for about $40 per bottle, so if you want to save money, try the fabric softener sheets first.

A second way to improve your bathroom without having to completely remodel it is to upgrade the fixtures. Most contractors use very cheap fixtures such as tile racks, lighting, toilet fixtures, and handles. They tend to wear out quickly and fall apart easily. Buying better quality fixtures will cost a bit of money, but the new look is much better than the old and the new fixtures are much more sturdy.
